Is Your Nonprofit Healthy? Take the 12-Question Pulse Check

Some years ago, we expanded our work into the faith-based nonprofit space.
The origin story of The Elemental Group was initially focused on churches, particularly those that didn’t have the resources to engage with consultancies that larger churches had.
And that’s what we did for years.
Then, at one point, a megachurch asked us to help assess the health and effectiveness of the dozens of nonprofits they supported financially. What’s more, could we not only survey and assess, but also develop a “menu” of services to aid these groups and increase impact?
To use corporate-speak, they simply wanted to measure their ROI—Return on Investment—of the groups they were supporting. Were the tithe dollars of their members being used wisely?
This wasn’t a shift in our mission as much as an addendum to what we felt called to do. And in our minds, it was symbiotic: when a church is a healthy, inspiring, functional community, it seems obvious that God would birth creative ideas in members’ heads to extend His work beyond the walls or purview of that particular church and its resources.
The number of transformative nonprofits started by Christians is overwhelming. For instance, in international aid alone, it’s estimated that over 60% of all U.S.-based foreign aid organizations are faith-based, and the vast majority are Christian.
What’s more, we typically find that Executive Directors of nonprofits are very responsive to coaching and help in identifying their organizational needs, which are often along the lines of board development, strategic planning, fundraising, and grant writing.
As a result, we put together a free 12-Question Pulse Check for Nonprofits. These are the top 12 questions to ask, particularly if an organization is pursuing alternate streams of income, e.g. grants and outside funding—funders will look particularly for these markers.
If you're a church supporting a nonprofit, encourage them to use this organizational self-assessment for sustainability and health.
